Every autumn, there is one evening I look forward to with particular affection: the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau. For me, it is more than the opening of a young bottle of French wine. It is a moment of generosity, anticipation, and togetherness—the very qualities I have always wanted guests to feel when they walk through the doors of Café Tatti.
This year, I invite you to join me in McLean for a Beaujolais Nouveau celebration inspired by one of France’s most joyful wine traditions. In our softly illuminated dining room, surrounded by good food, conversation, and the unmistakable spirit of French hospitality, I can think of few better ways to welcome the new vintage.
Why Beaujolais Nouveau Is a French Tradition Worth Celebrating
I have always loved culinary traditions that bring people to the table rather than keep ceremony at a distance. Beaujolais Nouveau does exactly that. It is young, lively, uncomplicated in the best sense, and meant to be enjoyed in company.
Beaujolais Nouveau comes from the Beaujolais wine region of France and is made from Gamay grapes. The modern celebration dates back to the twentieth century, and since a French decree in 1985, the wine has officially been released on the third Thursday of November. In 2026, that date falls on November 19. The official Beaujolais wine organization describes the occasion as a worldwide moment of conviviality, with people gathering each November to welcome the new vintage.
That spirit feels very natural to me. French dining has never been only about technique. It is also about the pleasure of sharing something delicious at precisely the right moment.
What Makes Beaujolais Nouveau So Distinctive
When I pour Beaujolais Nouveau, I do not approach it as I would a mature Bordeaux or a structured Burgundy. This is a wine whose charm comes from its freshness. I look for bright fruit, an easy texture, and the youthful energy that makes the first glass immediately inviting.
Traditional Beaujolais vinification commonly uses semi-carbonic maceration. Whole grape bunches are placed in a vat, where fermentation creates a carbon-dioxide-rich environment. This encourages fermentation inside intact berries and helps produce the vivid fruit character for which these wines are known.
For me, that process explains much of the wine’s personality. Beaujolais Nouveau is not asking you to analyze it endlessly. It asks you to taste, smile, pass the bottle, and enjoy the evening.
I often notice qualities that make it especially welcoming at the table:
- Fresh, expressive red-fruit character and a supple, refreshing style.
- Gentle structure that allows the wine to accompany a surprisingly broad variety of foods.
That versatility is one reason a Beaujolais Nouveau celebration belongs in a restaurant. Wine becomes much more interesting when food joins the conversation.
The Café Tatti Table Meets Beaujolais
At Café Tatti, I have always believed that French cuisine should feel refined without losing its warmth. For more than four decades, our restaurant has welcomed guests for romantic evenings, celebrations, and dinners meant to be remembered.
When I think about dishes to enjoy beside a youthful Beaujolais, I naturally turn toward flavors that complement rather than overpower its fruit.
Begin with Something Savory
Our Country Pâté, served with cornichons, frisée, and grain mustard, offers the richness and acidity I enjoy with a fresh red wine. I also like the idea of our Assiette de Charcuterie, where cured meats and pickled vegetables create contrasts of salt, richness, and brightness.
Then there are the Escargots Sauvages de Bourgogne, prepared with Pernod and garlic-parsley butter. Their richness makes each sip of young Beaujolais feel particularly refreshing.
Continue with the Comfort of French Cooking
A wine this lively can sit beautifully beside the deeper flavors of classic French dishes. Our Boeuf Bourguignon brings red-wine-braised beef together with vegetables, mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and lardons, while our Cassoulet combines slowly cooked Tarbais beans, confit duck leg, and Toulouse sausage.
These are dishes rooted in comfort and tradition. For me, they remind us that some of France’s greatest culinary pleasures began not with extravagance, but with patience, good ingredients, and a table filled with people.
A Beaujolais Nouveau Celebration Is Really About Togetherness
After decades in the kitchen, I still find that the most memorable meals are rarely defined by a single plate. I remember the laughter from a table celebrating an anniversary. I remember guests lingering over one last glass. I remember the moment a dining room becomes warmer because everyone seems to be enjoying the evening at once.
That is why Beaujolais Nouveau speaks to me.
The wine itself arrives quickly after harvest, carrying the freshness of a new vintage. The tradition surrounding it transforms that arrival into a shared occasion. Today, Beaujolais Nouveau is enjoyed far beyond France, yet its essential message remains wonderfully simple: the harvest has produced something new, so gather your friends and taste it together.
At Café Tatti, that philosophy feels familiar. Our dining room in McLean has spent more than forty years welcoming couples, families, friends, and generations of guests into an atmosphere created for memorable occasions.
Join Me at Café Tatti
For me, French dining is at its finest when elegance and pleasure meet naturally. A beautiful sauce matters. Proper technique matters. The wine in your glass matters. But the people around your table matter just as much.
That is what I hope to celebrate on Beaujolais Nouveau Night.
I invite you to discover the freshness of the new vintage, pair it with the comforting flavors of our French kitchen, and share an evening in the warm surroundings of Café Tatti. Our Beaujolais Nouveau celebration is an opportunity to enjoy a tradition that has always understood something essential about French gastronomy: food and wine become more meaningful when they bring us together.
After more than four decades of serving our community, that remains at the heart of everything I do.
Experience our Beaujolais Nouveau celebration at Café Tatti in McLean—raise a glass, savor classic French flavors, and join me for an evening filled with warmth, tradition, friendship, and joie de vivre.
